An old psychiatric hospital dating back to the late 1920s was built on over 600 acres of property becoming one of New York State's largest institutions. It had two main components for patients: housing/care facilities for children as well as separate care facilities for adults. In the 1970s the separate child facility was closed and the adult treatment center became an outpatient facility. The hospital that once accommodated more than 6000 patients/beds has now been reduced to 600. The former child facility lays abandoned and awaiting redevelopment. The property between the adult and child facilities has been parceled and a piece sold to a large banking company for a back-office/data center. The smokestacks seen from a distance are the remnants of the old steam powered electric plant which delivered power to the buildings on this psychiatric "campus." It is now abandoned and the property sits as the State of New York and local municipality try to arrange for a developer to remove the plant and remediate the property as part of a larger proposal for the area.
