Here's why I miss Southwest China

by Ben Mckechnie November. 02, 2016 1980 views

This time last year, I was teaching at a Chinese state university in Guilin. This corner of Guangxi Province is arguably the most photogenic region in all of China.

Mountains like sine waves barreling into the distance -- Guilin in Guangxi Province, China

This was the view looking south from the top of the highest peak in Guilin City's 7 Star Park. As I stood to catch my breath, Chinese tourists shouted "Yahoo!" at the top of their lungs. Judging by the number of people doing it, I could only assume it was a local tradition.

Looking north-east from 7 Star Park -- Guilin City

I used to climb the peak in 7 Star Park in the late afternoon. I'd then stay there for one of the most beautiful golden hours I've encountered around the world so far.

Looking west across the city -- Guilin

Whenever I ventured to this peak, I was rewarded by otherworldly light trickling through clouds.

Bicycle by the River Li -- Guilin County

A bicycle was the perfect way to see this region. Most hotels and hostels provide them to their guests free of charge.

I'm not in China anymore, but I often find myself daydreaming about those mountains. Perhaps you can see why.

Beautiful post. First photo is dreamy and artistic. Second reminds me of ancient Chinese paintings. I guess they were accurate representations. Nice "meeting" you.

This landscape is magical, but when you add the human cities becomes abstract.

Were I to make it to the peak, as seen in #1, I would shout Yahoo as well! It looks magical, and other worldly.

Magical is a good word for that region. The peak wasn't too high, but the humid afternoon made it a challenge!

Wonderful and magical place to be!
I love the cloudiness and the mystery that adds to the picture.

I recently got a photo book about China and I never knew it had such hidden gems.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Wonderful series! Dreamy haze.......Hopefully it was only fog rather than industrial smoke...
