What more can be said and written about New York City?
How many more photographs can be taken and shared of New York City?
It's all been said, photographed and done. Anything else would be cliche. Right?
Cliche: Something that is very often made and is therefore not original and not interesting.
Ouch! Not exactly flowery praise for the things that are considered to be cliche. Any creative type would dread hearing that their work is considered to be cliche. And yet, generally speaking, cliches continue and persist, from the very time that something is first considered to be cliche.
Photographers are very often advised to find their own style and to try to differentiate themselves from other photographers and photographs. Originality is good and desired, of course.
And yet, the cliche persists. Why is that?
In my opinion, I believe that cliches stay with us, because cliches make it a little easier to express ourselves and share with others. Although something may be cliche, most of us will immediately get, understand and find the shared meaning when we come across something that is considered to be cliche.
This is not such a bad thing. In my opinion, this is, actually, a great thing!
What can be so bad about being understood and accepted by others around us, when we are trying to express ourselves?
Simply put: Cliches Connect Us.
