Photography technical challenge: shallow dof

I have a couple other shots but haven't been loaded on this computer so this is my “stand-in” shot for the challenge.
I love using a shallow dof when taking pictures of flowers and when taking pictures of people too. It seems like even with a shallow dof there is variation in how shallow (blurred) the background is and what the resulting effect is. I like to use it when I want the subject to stand out more.
In a photo workshop I went to last spring I learned how to use the manual focus to get a clear, crisp subject with a soft focus of color in the background. I think I'll post this shot too just for comparison.
