Photography technical challenge: panning

ok so I'm a little late with my post for the challenge. This morning I went to Corvallis to watch the 1/2 marathon to cheer on a friend and also my future daughter-in-law ran her first 1/2 marathon. this in not her picture since I decided to take pictures at the finish line instead of trying to do a panning shot. I took over 200 shots and got maybe 8 that worked. not sure I met this challenge but I do get the idea :) if that counts.

Great shot. Love the softness, where in some photos softness is "frowned" upon. LOL This is a technique I use at the race track -quite often I may add. It does take lots of practice.
REMEMBER: plant your feet square. Follow your subject by moving your torso, from the waist up, left to right, or right to left depending on which direction the subject is traveling. Don't move your feet. Plant yourself in a comfortable position with feet facing forward spread about two feet apart. That seems to work for me.

I love that the other runners near by are really out of focus and the one in front has a little motion blur! Wonderful effect shown here!
