In the oriental sector of the province of Albacete there's a marsh complex called "Pétrola, Salobralejo, Corral Rubio and La Higuera“, that is made up by numerous lagoons placed between 855 and 900 meters of altitude. This wetland area are characterized by its saline and seasonal character according by a semiarid environment as this one.
These lagoons are fed by sweet waters that do not have exit, and that contributes the development of flora and microorganisms adapted to a high concentration of mineral salts.
The avifauna associated with this type of habitat is of high due value, especially to the increase of a resident colony of pink flamingo (Phoenicopterus rubes) and several couples of malvasía (Eng:white-headed duck; Oxyura leucocephala) and other birds typical of these ecosystems.
Since 2012 this area is nominated as Site for Community Importance in European Network known as Natura 2000, the largest network for protection areas in the world.
