Halsteren (The Netherlands) - part 1

by Björn Roose March. 26, 2019 345 views

Halsteren is a village - nowadays part of Bergen op Zoom (see here and here) - in the Dutch province North Brabant.

That's about everything you'll find about the village on Wikipedia in English, but I can tell you it has two fortresses which were part of the Waterlinie (a line of fortresses which was meant to protect the independent Netherlands from another Spanish invasion), a park, an old city hall, a few churches, and a mill. You'll find all of those in this post and the next ones.

Interesting looking tower. What is on the other side of the tower...steps?

On the other side is a "wall" like the one you see, but on the inside, indeed, steps. A very modern design paid with money raised via crowdfunding. On the steps there's the names of firms and people who helped financing it.
