Keszthely (Magyarország/Hungary) - part 1

by Björn Roose May. 07, 2019 325 views

Keszthely is, despite counting only 21.000 inhabitants, the largest city on the shores of Lake Balaton, and thus one of the main tourist destinations in the area (actually nearly every piece of shore of that lake is a tourist destination - like Balatonboglár, which I wrote about before). The city has been there since Roman times, although the first written historical evidence dates from 1247.

In this series however you will only find one photo from the city: we got caught up in a rainstorm after visiting the Festetics palace in the outskirts of town. It is a Baroque palace, of which construction was started by Kristóf Festetics in 1745 and lasted over ... a century. During that century the size of the originally planned building tripled. Hence the palace is now one of the three largest country houses in Hungary. And even if you're not one to get impressed by architecture, its zoo and botanical garden are certainly worth a visit. Even when the rain is about to ruin the party ...

Sounds like a place I would love to visit. Nice captures. I have seen that umbrella motives somewhere else as well, but can't remember where.

I've seen photos of the same phenomenon in a number of cities. It's not spreading as fast as the padlocks thing or the name of the city in big 3D characters, but it's becoming a trend too.

What an interesting set - maybe it was the umbrellas and dark skies setting the tone in #1, but I was not expecting to see cacti anywhere near a Baroque palace either...

Sometimes you even see them in 'the wild' in Hungary. Pretty cold winters, but rather hot summers ... More cacti to follow in other parts of this series, by the way smile
