Brühl received its town privileges in 1285 and from 1567 on the city was the official residence of the Prince Bishops of Köln (which is situated some twenty kilometres north of the city). One of those Prince Bishops, Clemens August, in the 18th century replaced a former ruined castle by two new palaces: Augustusburg and Falkenlust. Both of these palaces are nowadays on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
