Mayen (Deutschland/Germany) - Part 1

Mayen is a town in the eastern part of the Eifel region and is often called "The Gateway to the Eifel". It was an important economic centre in Roman times and remained so during most of its history. Its first official recognition had to wait till 1041 however, and Rudolf I von Habsburg granted it the status of town in 1291. The town was nearly entirely destroyed by the allied bombers during the Second World War, but the population voted in a referendum to rebuild it as it was before.

It was not a very bright day when we visited the town, but here and in the next post are some photos of it.

I like the fact that the sculpture have color.

I think the goal was to imitate the medieval style. Strangely enough lots of the staties, especially in churches, that are 'monochrome' today we're once polychrome. The colours disappeared over the years ...
