Caspar David Friedrich, a 19th century romantic landscape painter is generally considered the most important German artist of his generation (and tourists still visit places made famous by his paintings). He is best known for his allegorical landscapes with, as Wikipedia says, "contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic ruins".

Here's two of those paintings: Mondaufgang am Meer and Zwei Männer am Meer.
