Varaždin - Light in the Trinity Church (August 5)

After a trip around the castle - we can't get in - we pass a kind of small “ring” around the city center and walk past the Erdödy Palace and the Trinity Church, where I first encounter a problem that later on during this trip I will no longer be able to resolve: a polarizing filter that I cannot get removed from my camera. Not a disaster, but it does require creative use of the camera settings and the available light. The latter may also have been a problem for the monks who “penned” the parchments, incunabula and manuscripts that are kept in the adjacent monastery, including some of the oldest documents in Old Croat.

We then pass by the National Theater - best known today for the Baroque Music Festival held every September - and the 18th century Saint Nicholas Church (Sveti Nikola), named after the patron saint of the city and connected to an older, gothic clock tower, to continue our way past the Herzer Palace (now an insect museum - all dead specimens, unlike the mosquitoes that even find us in the city) to the St. John the Baptist church from 1650.
