To end the series of towers: Koblenzer Torturm (Koblenz gate tower), Kölner Turm (Cologne tower), Roter Turm (Red tower), Steingassenturm (Stone Alley tower) and Weisser Turm (White tower). If that doesn't ... turm you on, I don't know what will ... :-)

Pretty smart, by the way, how somebody thought of putting a house in that Kölner Turm.

I guess towers were important to provide a place where invaders may be seen, before they were close enough to surprise the 
inhabitants of the towns.....Nice shots!

To see the invaders, but mainly for defense actually. Towers were higher, thicker and stronger than the walls  thus harder to take and offered broader possibilities for counter attacks.
