Tarnaszentmária (Magyarország/Hungary) - Summer 2020

Tarnaszentmária, situated at the foot of the Mátra mountains, has one of the oldest churches in Hungary. It was founded by the Genus Aba, who were related to the Árpád house (the first ruler of Hungary was Árpád). The church has a central nave and eastern apsis and I have a few photos of it :-)

#2 Lovely detail! Almost Celtic, in Hungary?

I had the exact same idea: celtic knot. I'm pretty sure it was oriented in a different way originally too. The part on the right looks like it belongs on the bottom. Maybe Árpád's troops "found" it somewhere else in Europe smile

The whereabouts of Árpád are not very well known but by the time of his presumed death (907) his troops destroyed a Bavarian army at Pressburg and started raiding what is nowadays known as Germany, France and Italy. Since "troops" were what I mentioned, I'd answer that question with a "yes" smile
