Peekaboo! I see you! - That's what comes to mind whenever I see this picture.
On one of my work trips to Kenya, my African colleague took me to his village located in a remote area outside Nairobi. It was quite an extraordinary experience on many fronts, but one of the highlights was seeing the wild giraffes roaming nearby. They seemed curious to see us, and this one was peeking straight at me through an opening in the thorny bush. I am glad it remained motionless long enough for me to take this shot.
I like this photo so much that I decided to create some framed art from it that I can hang on the wall in my African/safari-themed room. The end result is something that looks like the following.
This photo came at a price though. When I was walking around in the thorny bush trying to get closer to the giraffes, I stepped on a thorn on a fallen branch that went straight through the sole of my shoe. (You can see the big long thorns on the branches in the blurry foreground of the photo.) The painful puncture at the bottom of my foot left me limping, and I had to watch every step I took until I got out.
In the end, it was still worth it, but I learned my lesson. After I returned home, I bought a pair of good hiking shoes with stronger soles to wear on subsequent trips to Africa.
Now I am properly equipped to go into thorny bushes to play peekaboo with giraffes. Or maybe even lions. At least my feet will be safe. 😁
