D is for... Dusty (336/365)

by Benny Law December. 02, 2019 145 views

After reading a few of today's 365 PhotoBlog theme posts, I got inspired to post this photo that I took while testing a macro extension tube with my Sony Alpha 6000 16-50mm kit lens even though I don't normally participate in this challenge.

The subject of the photo is a miniature model of a bowl of noodles that is only about an inch in diameter. I think my daughter gave it to me, and it had been sitting on my bookshelf for a while, so it had collected quite a bit of dust. The dust isn't that conspicuous when you look at the model from more than a foot away, but under the macro lens, it looks very pronounced.

A dusty bowl of noodles just looks so weird.

I also just have an extension tube but yours seems to get more in focus than mine. Reminds me of the plastic food replicas outside Japanese restaursnts in Tokyo

You're right, Lee. Those extension tubes can be tricky to use, and the DOF is extremely shallow, so I try to compensate with higher F stops. My daughter loves those Japanese plastic food replicas. She visited Tokyo recently for work and almost bought some of those replicas but they were crazy expensive.

I think I need some more Coffee today. After sitting here looking at the photo I kept trying to figure out how they created this to look like some Bonito flakes then I read the rest of the story.

You just taught me something new. I didn't know what Bonito flakes were, so I had to Google it.

I like the shot even with the dust. Looks like the extension tube is a very nice addition to your bag of tricks smile

Thanks, Camellia. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a real macro lens, and this inexpensive extension tube fits the bill for the rare occasion I need it for.
