Abingdon

These photos were taken in the town of Abingdon in the UK. It's about a 45 minute car ride from the airport in London. I was there two years ago for a team meeting. My big boss was living there at the time.

I only stayed for a few days to attend the meeting and didn't get much time to explore and take photos. That's a shame since the town was actually very charming. The only unpleasant part was staying at the B&B. It was a very old house with an extremely low ceiling, and I felt like I was in Snow White's house with the seven dwarfs. It was also freeeezing cold in there! The owner turned off the water heating every night to save money, and she said that's customary for the people there. I was lucky I didn't get pneumonia.

I took this shot while I was waiting for my taxi to go to the airport on the morning of my departure. I was just standing outside the B&B where I was staying. The church down the street is St. Helen's Church which is a famous landmark in this town.

I passed through Abingdon only once, three years ago this month, on the way to Abingdon air show. Traffic flows were a complete disaster and the place was gridlocked but it did give me a chance to look at the town on the way through!

I was caught in traffic too on the day we were invited for dinner at my big boss' home. I was riding in a tiny Fiat Mini and the streets were so narrow and irregular. I think everything in that town needs to be scaled up by a factor of at least 1.5. 🙂 BTW, I have always been fascinated with aircraft, especially the older ones (but not too old). I guess we have a common interest.

Haha! I'm sure Snow White would be asking " Hey! whats wrong with a low roof??? " 😊 I really like the view from the third shot.

I'm glad my big boss picked that meeting place. The environment was wonderful. At the end of the day, there were enough positive things to make my Snow White experience more tolerable. 😊

Very nice place, very nice pictures.

Pneumonia included in hotel rates is not a usual practice in Europe. Brexit to blame?... 😁

I've stayed in a real hotel in London before and it was fine, though very expensive. I think it's just the B&B's especially in the small towns that may come with some surprises. 🙂

Unfortunately  most of the homes in UK have hitting problems :(

Maybe it's because of the age of these homes. Thanks for stopping by, Aleksandra.

It was indeed. I would go back to visit again if I had a chance, but I would find a better inn to stay. 🙂

But at least the light was very good to take pictures. And did they serve you an English breakfast?

Yes, I would say the breakfast was the best part. The host lady made a very tasty mushroom dish every morning.

Well, I don't know if it's customary to turn of the heating at night in England, but I've never slept in a heated bedroom except when on holidays and at night the temperature in the rest of the house is decreased to 15 °Celsius (59 Fahrenheit). Slept in an appartment in Germany for a week a few years ago where the temperature was controlled from the upstairs floor (where the owner lived). It was in the middle of winter and we found the heat so terrible that we kept the windows open all day and night smile

It's definitely hard to sleep too when it's too warm. I survived those cold nights in Abingdon with a thick duvet, but taking a shower was much worse because it was so cold in the bathroom and the hot water pressure was very weak. Fortunately, it was just a few days.
