The Chestnut Guy

This is the first of a series of blog posts featuring images that I captured a couple years ago in Lisbon while I was attending some business meetings. A number of these images are night shots taken while I was out exploring the city in the evening when I had some personal free time. They are all handheld shots. I was roaming around the hilly part of the city most of the time, and there was no way I would lug around a tripod with me. I had just bought my Sony Alpha 6000 mirrorless camera and that was the first time I was travelling with it, so I was still trying to get acquainted with it.

Lisbon is a really interesting and photogenic city with lots of character. There is lots to love about it. The weather was great, and the food was fantastic, especially the seafood. If I had a chance, I would gladly go back to visit again.

The smell of roasted chestnuts is quite irresistible, especially in the cool evening air. I would have bought some if I had not been totally preoccupied with trying to get a few good shots at that spot. I actually stood there for a while trying different settings on the camera and comparing the results. My hair and my jacket were starting to soak up the smoky smell, but I guess that's nothing compared to what the vendor gets. He must be permeated inside out with the smell of roasted chestnuts, being immersed in this smoke all day and all night. He looks like he is being smoked in the picture!

This is a short post, but I hope you enjoyed it. Stay tuned for the next one.

I love chestnuts cooked on an open grill, the smell of the fruit and the smoke just become irresistible.  I'm impressed with your a6000 sonny,  wish I could go back to Lisbon - I was there a good 40 yrs ago, so the changes must be fantastic.

I'm sure you'll find parts of the city still the same while other parts unrecognizable. It really is a great city to visit. As for the Sony a6000, I think it's a great little camera, and I'm far from maximizing its full potential yet. I'm just relying on instincts most of the time instead of real knowledge and skills.

It's a pleasure to be able to share, and I'm glad you like it. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. The next post will come as soon as I find the time to process the raw images. I'm taking this as an opportunity for me to learn to use Affinity Photo effectively.

Great shots, very atmospheric.  On first reading I thought you said you were shooting with an Alpa and thought wow, that's quite soemthing.  The Swiss Alpa is a camera I lusted after in my youth aeons ago!

Thanks, Jim. Never heard of the ALPA before. I only became more serious with photography after the digital revolution started. Thanks for stopping by, and nice to meet you on PB.

Nighttime street photography is challenging. A lot of my shots were not good enough to keep. Only a few turned out OK. Glad you like these ones.
