More of Lisbon

It's a long weekend, and that means I can find a bit of time to process a few more photos to post. As a continuation of my Lisbon series, here are a few photos of the city taken from late afternoon to early evening. After a day of business meetings, I was roaming the streets with camera in hand and eyes peeled, eagerly anticipating an evening full of exciting photographic opportunities in this fascinating city. As usual, I am only sharing a few photos at a time with more to come. Hope you enjoy them.

The taxi lane. What caught my attention was the reflection of the taxi's headlight on the cobblestones. The sky in the original photo was blown out, so I took a patch of the sky from the original of #4 and #5 and merged it into this one. Click on it if you want to see the whole photo on a computer.

I don't know what those cute little vehicles with three wheels are called. (Maybe Antonio can help.) I like the reflections on their plastic coverings in this photo. They look like small LED lights. Note the castle on the hill. That's the famous Castelo de São Jorge I have blogged about before.

This is one of the streets in the tourist area in an old part of the city. This kind of setup for outdoor dining is very common, although I didn't see many customers. Maybe it was too cold, or maybe it was still early in the evening.

The following are two variations of the same photo which was not taken on the same day as the above. This one was taken through the window of a restaurant where I joined up with other teams who took part in a team building activity that afternoon (a scavenger hunt that had us hit various landmarks of the city). My team lost badly, and one of my teammates even hurt her leg. Not my idea of team building, but it did give me an opportunity to walk through parts of the city and make some mental notes of the spots that were worth revisiting later on my own time.

The original photo was a bit blurry and uninspiring, so I did what I would usually do in this type of situation — apply some painterly effects with my photo editing tools. I am not totally happy with the results, but I thought I would put them in anyway. All effects were applied with SPE and IrfanView.

Created mainly with the oil painting effect in SPE. Minor touch-ups done in IrfanView.

Created with a couple of effects in SPE including the hyper real effect.

Until next time, stay safe and well my friends.

Great set Benny. If I never have the chance to get to Lisbon, then at least I can experience vicariously through your lens. I actually like #4 and 5. Really cool and different effects. IMHO we don't always have to take the most razor sharp pics that we always want to be effective. +1

Thanks, J D. I'm glad you like #4 and #5. I really enjoy salvaging blurry photos worth saving with painterly effects.

Hi Benny, Very nice light. I noticed you took the pics with 30-mm lens (APS-C). The composition and perspective are peaceful and have an eye-soothing effect (if this is the phrase). Lisbon...what a beauty... and half of the world was ruled from there once.

I admire your stamina to walk with a camera after business meetings. Most of the time I would retreat to my hotel room straight from the office.

Thanks, Piotr. The Sigma 30mm lens was my first prime lens for my Sony α6000. It was very inexpensive (well under $300 CAD) but surprisingly sharp. However, in the area where I was roaming, the streets were narrow and I often found myself in pretty tight places, wishing I had a wider lens with me.

No matter how tired I may be, I wouldn't miss the chance to go out and shoot whenever I go on business trips because I don't get to travel much on my own, so those are my primary opportunities.

Thanks for treating so well the capital of my country Benny. 😊 Those vehicles are called Tuk-Tuk like in India or Sri Lanka.

Thank you, Antonio. Your country is beautiful, and I would love to return some day to see the rest of it. Perhaps I'll be going around in a Tuk-Tuk. 😀

Definitely on my bucket list! Outside of one business meeting, all I have seen of Lisbon is the journey from the airport into the countryside around Evora (itself very charming for different reasons)

I usually try to extend my business trips by a day or two with vacation time just so I could explore a little more on my own, but it doesn't always work out. Hope you get to visit Lisbon some day.

I love #1,#2, #3. I think you did a super job on the sky in #1 and I like the reflections of the taxis and the little scooter cars, plus that feeling of being in a big city. I am not a big fan of team building activities...hated them when we had to do it in our school meetings. I never found a benefit to those activities, but then nobody asked my opinion 😉. I'll be honest #4 and #5 just don't make it for me. Not sure if it's the colors in general or the effect, just not my style, but glad you shared with us. smile

Thank you so much for your honest feedback, Camellia. I debated with myself on #4 and #5 and eventually decided to include them, not because I like them but perhaps I didn't want all my time invested in the edits to go to waste, hoping that some beholder may find some beauty in their eye. 🙂 I'm glad you like the others though.
