The Red Tuk-Tuk

This picture was taken outside an old cathedral in Lisbon, so it's part of my Lisbon series. Like the photos in my previous post, this was also taken in the golden hour. I was not happy with the original image, so I wasn't going to include it in my posts. Also, discouraged by my recent failure to save another unsatisfactory photo with artistic effects, I wasn't going to try it with this photo.

But then something changed my mind today. I finally decided to give it a chance. I thought, if it doesn't work out, just throw it away. It won't hurt trying, and more practice is always a good thing. So out came my editing tools, and after trying something different this time, I arrived at something that pleased my eye.

Let me know what you think of it, and as always, I cherish your honest feedback. To see the details of the edited image, you need to view it on a computer.

Painterly transformation: I first applied the "Detailed aqua" effect to this image in SPE. I then loaded it into Affinity Photo and ran it through a series of add noise, denoise, unsharp, and selective colour filters. The broken border was added with IrfanView. I like the end result.

For comparison, here is the original photo that I started with.

The original, unedited photo (downsized). Pretty flat and uninspiring, right?

Once again, my wonderful image editing tools gave this failing photo a second chance, and I am very grateful to have them.

I just think there is too much noise. I like the dynamics of the picture with the tuk-tuks and the people.

Thanks for your feedback, Antonio. I like the same dynamics too. The noise was added intentionally to create the effect I had in mind, but perhaps too much to your taste. 🙂 You must have a large screen that allows you to see the fine details.

👍 That's good to know. I'll take that into account in the future.

#1 is nice with the painterly effect. As for #2, it is nice but a little crowded in the sense that I don't know what is the main subject / focus if I don't read your comment. The light in interesting on the extreme right  but I prefer the subtle light on the wall. Perhaps cropping off the tuk tuk on the extreme right, the focus is now on the red tuk tuk  which also repeats in the color red jacket of the boy. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insight, Nancy. Much appreciated. When I took this photo, I don't think I had any particular object in mind that I wanted to be the subject. Something about that whole scene caught my attention and I just instinctively took the shot. Although the title suggests that I view the red tuk tuk as the subject, I am actually more interested in the whole scene, especially the different people doing what they were doing. Maybe that's why it may look busy without a focus. Thanks again for your comments. 🙂

You're welcome, Benny. Otherwise your heart is much better now as in a long ago post, you did mentioned about a poor heart ...

Thanks for remembering and asking, Nancy. I am still struggling with the issue, and in fact, it seem to be worsening. I am now waiting to be scheduled for a procedure to try to fix it since the medications I am taking seem to be losing its effectiveness.

I really like it, Benny. I think some of the SPE effects, if used lightly, can, as you say, save some photos you'd like to see revived. Even if you don't end up with a product you like, the process, for me is fun and enlightening.

I absolutely agree, John. The process itself is so enjoyable regardless of the outcome. I have to watch the time whenever I do this because it's so easy to just get totally immersed and not realize how much time has gone by.

GREAT JOB!
But ... I prefer the #2 where the light of the sunset the walls predominate
- so there is a clear contrast with it and the people& surroundings.

Growing up in India these were always called Put Puts. Anyway, your photo, I think the effect works quite well because it is subtle and doesn't take over from the content. I am not a big fan of "effects" other than what you might call old fashioned dark room effects as they are often overdone. In this case it adds something to the image.

I guess these cute little vehicles have different local names. I'll try to remember to call them Put Puts if and when I go to India. 🙂 Regarding effects, I do try not to overdo it when my intention is to treat the image as a true photo, but when I want to deliberately turn a photo into more of an artistic image, then anything goes. I'm glad you like the effect in this case. I appreciate your feedback.

Well worth the extra effort! There is just as much, if not more, artistic ability required in effective editing as there is in choice of subject matter, composition, lighting, etc.....no??? Thanks for the technical explanations! Nice job!+1

It does take effort, practice, and experience to be able to master the tools and achieve satisfactory results whether I'm touching up photos or applying artistic transformation, but it is a very enjoyable process. Thanks for your comments and support, Jay. Much appreciated! 😊

While I like the editing you have done I do believe that the original was also very nice. The sunlight on the walls and the shadows, brought attention not only to the people around but the Tuk Tuk as well (love that word Tuk Tuk just rolls off my tongue 😉). Anyway, both are very nice. It is rather interesting how our eyes play with our mind. 😀

Thank you so much for your encouraging words, Camellia. It's interesting that both you and Craig like the original as well. It goes to show how we all see things differently, and diversity is not a bad thing. 😊
