Nightfall in Lisbon

by Benny Law April. 26, 2021 280 views

Continuing with my Lisbon series, here are a couple of cityscape photos that I took after the sun had disappeared below the horizon. The hill in the city provided an excellent point of view of this part of the city on the northern bank of the Tagus River. I love how striking the red roofs are in these photos, especially the first one. These red roofs are a characteristic of the architecture in Lisbon.

I am usually not a big fan of murals or graffiti, but this one looks really nice and integrates so well with the building. The black streaks running down on the wall from the roof line also add character to the appearance. Not sure if they are part of the artwork or just mold.

I like how the warm light inside the bell tower makes it look like a fireplace. I wish more lights were turned on inside these buildings. That would have made for a more interesting photo. I guess many people were not home yet.

Both photos are handheld shots captured as JPEG and processed with Affinity Photo.

Hi Benny, Thanks for visiting my blog and comments and clicking likes. I am pleased to return to see your work again - I remember I was very impressed with some of your night shots in the past, although not as late in the evening both of these images capture the essence of fading light. I really like the first image but I feel that a tighter crop just above the white minarets would improve your image by cutting out the elements of modernity which distracts from a beautifully captured photograph - if you roll up the image until that top part is gone, I think you'll see what I mean. Please don't be offended at my comment, but years ago I belonged to a camera club and all our work was critiqued which I found helpful. Please feel free to offer your critique on my work - I am always pleased to learn and improve. Going back to you first image - it is one you could look at for hours, seeing something new as you gaze around, for example, there is a little attic window lit up just below the two white towers, which at first glance you don't notice. Although you can see the same modernity to the right hand side of the second image, it does not distract nearly as much. The lighting on the church is fabulous and that is enhanced with the street lamp shining on the building in front of the church. The mix of lighting is really superb and well captured. The background feels important as it gives context to the setting.

Regards,

Andrew

Andrew, thank you so much for taking the time to give me such detailed feedback. I really appreciate your critique concerning the first image. Your advice makes a lot of sense. I actually thought about that too, but got into a dilemma since I really wanted to include the water, and I ended up keeping that part. Please feel free to continue to leave me your honest critique if you so choose. I don't have a formal training in photography and I don't really take photos that often, usually only when I go on trips. I normally just rely on my basic knowledge and instinct, so I would welcome the opportunity to learn from others who are kind enough to share their knowledge and insight with me. However, I do spend a lot on time editing my photos. That is a process I enjoy tremendously.

Both photos are stunning captures. The view and the roofs really stand out. #2 is even more impressive to me because of how the church stands out amongst the rest of the buildings You definitely found the right spot to capture the beauty of the city.

Thanks, Camellia. One great thing about Lisbon is that you can easily get breathtaking views just walking around the hilly part of the city. Are you booking your tickets yet? grinning

Thanks, Antonio. I barely had time to scratch the surface. I feel this city and country has so much more to be explored and enjoyed.

Portugal is a wonderful surprise. Small country but so diversified. After Costa Rica I will post some Portugal pictures to show what I'm saying.

Very nice pictures. I was in Lisbon only once (stayed to weeks in Estoril and took a commuter train to the city almost every day). Hard not to fall in love with it.

Yeah, it is a very lovable city indeed. You should go back to visit since it's not that far from you. Well, closer than many other places you have travelled to anyway.

I really like how the building with the tower in #2 is lit up in white and how the tower has a light in it. Just a nice contrast to the other buildings.

Thanks, Craig. Yes, the white, lit up building does provide a nice contrast in that picture. I would have preferred to see more warm lights inside the surrounding buildings though. The dark windows make the mood a bit cold.
