Time Out Market

by Benny Law June. 07, 2021 430 views

In the previous post of my Lisbon series, I promised to share some "Time Out" photos in my next post. Well, here they are.

As you may have gathered from the title and the cover image, "Time Out" refers to an indoor market place in Lisbon which is basically a gigantic food court where you can try all kinds of wonderful cuisines. Follow this link if you would like to learn more. Be sure to watch the video on the WHO WE ARE page. (I can see Camellia booking her flight after that. 😃)

I didn't seek this place out on my own. I was on a business trip, and this was the place where the whole team had dinner after an afternoon of team building activities (a brutal scavenger hunt that saw us running around the city for that whole afternoon). I didn't like the team activities, but I loved the place so much that I decided to go back for a photo shoot on a free evening. These photos were taken on that subsequent visit.

This is the best spot on the entire floor for eating because it is more private, being separated by a half-wall on both sides from the rest of the eating space in the building. Too bad the guy caught me taking this picture and turned his head to look at me. It made me feel a bit uncomfortable.

I so wanted to try these freshly baked Portuguese custard tarts! But I had to restrain myself since I am diabetic. This girl from a neighbouring food stall doesn't seem to share my health concern and has her eyes set on these tantalizing tarts while on a break. Lucky her.

The girl serving at this dessert stall appears to be very shy and hiding behind a glass bowl full of boxes of sweets, peeking through the gaps at the male customer. Actually, it is just an illusion created by the angle at which the picture was taken which was unintentional.

This customer seems to be having a hard time deciding what to buy at this souvenir stall. He has such an intense expression on his face, and he is even clenching his fist. I wonder what the stall keeper was thinking as he was watching this prospective customer agonizing over his merchandise.

All of the above images were taken in JPEG format and touched up with Affinity Photo. There is more to come in part two of this post, so stay tuned.

Hi Brother Benny,

Actually, I wrote a comment a few weeks ago (roughly) but it seems not to be here - I also faved #1.

I cannot remember what I actually said, but to reiterate (short form) I think #1 is a classic image nearing competition class - many wonderful attributes - leading lines, story-telling, perspective & composition (breaking the rule-of-thirds approach to great effect), compelling subject (especially the chap looking straight at you), lovely lighting & reflections, terrific exposure & colour balance, excellent depth of field...and so on. My kind of image and one that shows your skills as a photographer and artist!

The whole series is outstanding but #1 is by far my favourite.

Not be on PhotoBlog for a while as I'm still not very well - I had my CAT scan and that did not throw any light on my conditions, but I've been referred to a specialist Neurologist and have an appointment for 17 August - so we'll see how that goes.

I hope you have been well your good self, but I know you've been waiting on a procedure too - are you still waiting? You indicated that you have been too busy at work and that it had been affecting your health - hope things have calmed down a bit since then.

Not really had much of a chance of using my new camera (or any camera) - however, my son Rory has asked Anne & I to join him and his family for a holiday at the end of July into October, so we'll see how things pan out.

The last three weeks we've been able to attend our church services - first time for a long time owing to Corona Virus restrictions - so that has been lovely.

Take care my friend.

An apt hymn:

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Stedfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.

It is safely moored, ’twill the storm withstand,
For ’tis well secured by the Savior’s hand;
And the cables passed from His heart to mine,
Can defy the blast, through strength divine.

It will firmly hold in the straits of fear,
When the breakers have told the reef is near;
Though the tempest rave and the wild winds blow,
Not an angry wave shall our bark o’erflow.

It will surely hold in the floods of death,
When the waters cold chill our latest breath;
On the rising tide it can never fail,
While our hopes abide within the veil.

Cheers,

Andrew

Dear brother Andrew,

So nice to hear from you again. Have been thinking about you from time to time and praying for your well being. Thank you so much for your sharing and wonderful (but perhaps undeserved) compliments. I am so glad you like the first photo, but to be honest, it was not an intentional effort. I am just a casual occasional photographer and I just go by instincts. I don't think about all those rules and principles that you mentioned. If something catches my eye, I click away. I then spend time fixing and enhancing the images with software which I enjoy doing very much. If I do end up with something half decent, I just consider myself lucky.

I hope the neurologist will be able to diagnose your conditions and come up with an effective treatment. The upcoming trip with your family sounds exciting. I know that as we get old, spending time with family on trips can bring so much joy. I hope you have a great time and get a chance to use your camera to capture some great images and memories that you can share with us.

I'm still waiting for the hospital to call. The doctor did warn me that it could be late fall before I hear from them. I guess it could be worse if I were living in some other countries, so I should be grateful and not complain. My job situation is heading in the wrong direction, and if things do get worse, I may be considering an early retirement. I just can't take more stress than what I am dealing with now.

Thanks for sharing such a lovely hymn. Indeed, we have an anchor that will hold us firm through the fiercest storm, and our hopes abide within the veil. I wish more people can come to know and accept Christ so that they don't have to struggle on their own or hold on to false hopes and empty optimism.

I will still be really busy for a while, but will check in as often as I can. May the Lord's abundant grace be with you. Take care!

Great photos Benny! I loved the great eye to eye contact in #1. And for a second I thought you had a Matt Damon sighting in #4grinning

Thanks, JD. The guy in #4 actually reminds me of an ex-colleague of mine. Matt Damon could afford to buy the whole stall. He wouldn't be agonizing over what to pick. smile

#2Those custards are a national sweet and they are incredible good. I've already eaten here a couple of times. And now there are more like these in Lisbon. Thanks for such good pictures of Portugal

Thanks Antonio. You know these tarts are special when you see a whole stall dedicated to making and selling them. I hope that some day, I will be able to freely enjoy delicious treats like these.

I'm glad you like this series, and I'm always happy to share. I don't photograph people that much, and so far, I haven't encountered any hostile response yet.

The fact that the man turned his head to look at you in #1 gives the photo an interesting point of view! Well done, Benny even though it had made you felt uncomfortable +1smile

Love this post Benny! These are the types of photographs I like to take. Your lighting and colors are just up my alley. And yes, this whole weekend I spent some time with friends who travel a lot, each of us trying to figure out our next trip. I brought up Lisbon multiple times, definitely on my bucket list. By the way, I didn't know that Chicago had a Time Out as well. Might need to take a trip to Chicago soon smile

Yeah, I didn't know about the other worldwide locations until I found the website, and apparently there are four just in the US and one in Canada. Good to know for people who love food and travel.
