Monsal Dale Viaduct

Monsal Dale is a valley in the Peak District of Derbyshire in England. In geological history this area of Derbyshire was long ago under water, and is formed from a subsequent uplift of resultant sedimentary deposits, known as the Derbyshire Dome.

The Headstone Viaduct was built by the Midland Railway over the river Wye. Whilst considered elegant today, with a preservation order being placed on it in 1970, when it was built in 1863 it was seen as destroying the beauty of the dale.
