Seagulls. An afternoon at the beach last fall. They are good practice. For many things—panning, bird photography, action photography, composition, focus, etc. Easy to photograph as they are plentiful (at least near me they are...) and not scared. (Sometimes they are scary...really, I don't like birds....) They will let you get quite close, closer still if you have a potato chip or 2. Each looks different. They have personality too.
