Tribute To Jerry

by Camellia Staab September. 10, 2018 425 views

Every year for the last 24 years, the local gift shop, Penny Lane, has been providing a free outdoor concert in tribute of Jerry Garcia, the legendary guitar player of the band Grateful Dead.

Every year, for the last 24 years, fans of Jerry Garcia dress up in their tie dye outfits, pack their coolers and head to Douglas Park, to hear some local bands play their music.

This year, after two days of heavy downpour, the sun chose to shine its face just in time for this outdoor event to take place. The band lineup included six local bands with Perfunctory This Band, a Grateful Dead Cover Band, closing the festivities.

♪♪ The Greatful Dead-Sugar Magnolia-Live '74 ♪♪

Sugar Magnolia blossom's blooming
Head's all empty and I don't care
Saw my baby down by the river
Knew she'd have to come up soon for air
Sweet blossom come on under the willow
We can have high times if you'll abide
We can discover the wonders of nature
Rolling in the rushes down by the riverside
She's got everything delightful
She's got everything I need
Takes the wheel when I'm seeing double
Pays my ticket when I speed
She come skimming through rays of violet
She can wade in a drop of dew
She don't come and I don't follow
Waits backstage while I sing to you
She can dance a Cajun rhythm
Jump like a Willys in four wheel drive
She's a summer love in the spring, fall and winter
She can make happy any man alive
Sugar magnolia
Ringin' that blue bell
Caught up in sunlight
Come on out singing
I'll walk you in the sunshine
Come on honey, come along with me
She's got everything delightful
She's got everything I need
A breeze in the pines in the summer night moonlight
Crazy in the sunlight yes indeed
Sometimes when the cuckoo's crying
When the moon is halfway down
Sometimes when the night is dying
I take me out and I wander round
I wander round
Sunshine daydream
Walking through the tall trees
Going where the wind goes
Blooming like a red rose
Breathing more freely
Light out singing
I'll walk you in the morning sunshine
Sunshine daydream
Walk you in the sunshine

He was a guitar player for the band Grateful Dead that a lot of "hippies" worshiped (not sure why).
That bus was a site :)

I really would have liked to go inside Bertha and take pictures....from outside it looked like it was a paraphernalia store on wheels, but I was too chicken to ask :)

Pretty cool that they have been doing that for the past 24 years! You got some really good shots. Happy for you the rain stopped and you were able to share.
Reading below I'm kind of with y'all, I just like a couple of their songs. I guess the rest I don't get, but GD had more than enough Deadheads that did. In the end it's all music.

Nice camera work!
Never could understand the appeal of the GD......
I was more of a Beatles fan.....

I am not sure what the appeal is/was to be honest. I like a few of their songs but then that is it. Maybe it was the psychedelic tie dye ;) For me this was n opportunity to take pictures.

I think some young folks looked up (or down) to the band, when it was "cool" to be a nihilist .........
The bands name said it all........better off dead......right???
