A Lesson in Entomology

What the heck are these?

Google image search tells me they are hornets, then tells me that is a macro shot. Well the macro shot I will accept, but HORNET???? No way!

Who's got the answer?

I caught them on the fence yesterday, all huddled together, young and old, resting on some morning glory leaves and some milkweed pods. They don't seem to fly, at least they didn't when I got real close to them. Instead they walked off, or rather scurried off. Their shape reminds me of fireflies but they don't have the same coloring.

So what are they?

There seems to be a master of all....sitting on top of every other bug/

WOW, fascinating pictures - all of them! After reading Sherry's answer I followed up this bugs. It seems you photographed a family gathering.
Btw, your new blog-picture is so incredible! A deer is rowing through in the trees! Is this the US version of a Wolpertinger? joy

Thanks to Sherry I was able to follow up as well and was sort of impressed since some of my photos did look somewhat like the photos Google search brought up.

I don't know about the deer being the US version of Wolpertinger, but I do know that the people who had this  this installed have a great sense of humor.

You definitely get the prize for educating me Sherry, thank you. It does make sense that they were all hovering over  the Milkweed pod. It is amazing what you see when you make photography your hobby smile
