The Hair of The Dog

On the corner of 4th and Monroe there sits a unique business. What makes this a unique business is that it is not only a barber shop, where men and boys go to get their hair cut, but it is also a tavern, a place to go have some craft beer or a bloody mary.

The barbershop section of the business is separated from the tavern with a partition wall housing a door and a large window pane. Depending on which side of the building you are sitting; at the bar waiting for your turn in the barber’s chair, or in the chair getting your hair cut, you can easily see what is going on in either side of the building. Of course because of the liquor laws in this country, no one under 21 can enter the tavern section, so obviously no drinks are offered to minors. But minors still get a treat while waiting. A bucket full of candy sits at the end of the room awaiting youngsters to help themselves.

If you haven’t noticed after looking at the photos…they do have a unique way of writing their business name….The Hair of the Dog Bar/Bershop.

On my next venture there I am thinking of having one of their "Tito Bloody Mary" drinks…who’s coming with me?

Thanks! So which Saturday shall we go? ;) I had a good time although I would very much like to go back and try a bit harder and make some corrections. Wish there were more places like this around. There are tons of women's salon's but you know how women are...they would frown at my presence ;)

Now that's my kind of place! Love your shots! You did fantastic! If I go there I just might forget what I went there for! I give it to you for approaching the owner, and glad he didn't mind. The card bit is a great idea too. Cheer's!

Thanks George. I was so impressed with the back "sitting room", never had imagined there was a backroom such as that one on the premises. The owner has done a super job. Would love to go back for a second try at improving. grinning

Some nice pictures...reminds me, of when I was young kid...the barber was 2 doors down from my dad's snack bar, it was one barber  the owner. A place where the neighbourhood would wait for the cuts..and actually talk to each other, about issue that they all were concerned about. I miss those days..in the 40's and 50's

Sydney, I believe this was the intent of the owner. His website even describes the place as the kind of barber your grandpa was used to, although the barber/owner is way too young to know the difference :)

Oh that is a great set of my kind of place, although I thought for a second #11 would be a person with an odd haircut. Brilliant shots of a great place. Now I want to know, did you ask for an haircut or a beer?

No, beer and/or bloody mary ( apparently they serve them on Saturdays) are on my next list to do. This time around I thought I did well to go in ask if I could shoot. Believe me it took some courage and three weeks of contemplation  on my part :)

Thank you Andi....it really is a sweet place and the guy who started it is younger than my son, (he is the guy in photo #4). I didn't even realize they had such a nice "sitting area" until I walked into the tavern.

Thank you! I walked in and asked the owner ( pic #4) if I could take some photos. He said he did not care. When I left, the place I left one of my cards ( yes I made some cards to hand out so people wouldn't think I am just some pervert smile) And after I posted the link on facebook &  pics on Instagram I tagged them.
