This is a submission to our weekly theme "Sunrise". If you have not submitted an entry yet, I highly recommend this Tutorial
I was little worried about this week's theme because I am not a morning person at all. My days usually end at 4AM and begins around 10AM. So, I usually catch a glimpse of the morning sun through my window shades. For sure it is not a delightful scene for me at this hour when I am finally trying to get some sleep. However, seeing the morning sun over the lake was a great experience.
As mentioned by Tiffany in her tutorial, planning ahead is crucial for any type of shoot but more so when it comes to sunrise. You're going to head out in the dark, so it makes it easier if you pack everything the night before and scout a possible location. For scouting, I just used google maps and this tool. However, I did the mistake of arriving only a few minutes to spare. Having to rush through my gear and camera settings, I made few mistakes. Biggest mistake being not paying enough attention to composition. Luckily, I was still able to capture few shots that I liked.
It was an eye opener to be at the beaches at this hour. There were so many people running, doing yoga, and walking. I had no idea it was this active in the morning. In the picture below, I captured a group of paddle boarders speeding towards the sun, welcoming it to Toronto.
I captured this last photo with an ND grad filter and ND6 filter because the sun was too strong at that point. However, my filters were very old and of low quality. As a result I got strong vignetting and strange color tones. I had to crop a lot from the photo to make this.
