Shinkansen, transporting at 200 mph

If you haven't been to Japan, Shinkansen is a good enough reason to visit! I heard about this amazing train while doing my trip research. It didn't disappoint. We bought the Japan Rail pass which costs about $700 CAD and covers almost all railway routes within Japan for two weeks. It is a really good option if you are planning to travel to multiple cities and far corners of this beautiful country.

Most importantly, the JR pass include the Shinkansen train! We didn't get a chance to experience it in Tokyo because we took normal trains and subways to travel within the city. However, we had our first chance when we went to Kyoto from Tokyo.

Since it was a bit cold that morning, we decided to stay inside the glass booth located on the platform. All of a sudden there was a strange noise coming and it changed to something similar to the noise made by an F-16 fighter jet. I really thought there was a low flying jet, the next second this train passes you in an instant!

This train went so fast even while passing the platform because it is not supposed to stop at this station. If the train stops at the station, it will switch to a different track few miles ahead and slow down when reaching the platform.

Photo gear means I have to carry two bags.

The shinkansen will whisk you away from one city to another in a matter of hours. However, I still need to get to the train station first...

Beautiful sunlight hitting the platform. A chilly morning.

Wonderful pictures, Ram! Incidentally, we've just been talking about the bullet trains with friends yesterday!

Fantastic photos - no 1 gives a real sense of the speed. I experienced a similarly awe inspiring experience at a station here a few years back when the Tornado (a modern steam engine) passed through the station at fulll chat. The speed was somewhat slower than the bullet train (although probably still 70mph - pretty fast for a steam train!) but the noise was astonishing! Sadly my camera was in my bag so I just have the sound to remember but now photos.

Thanks for sharing wonderful pictures and description, Ram!
Shinkansen symbolizes modern Japan. It's fast, accurate, safe and clean.
I wish we Japanese people could get JR pass... (^o^)
