An American Bullfrog

An American Bullfrog

It will not be too much longer when the sounds of these male American Bullfrogs will be emanating from my pond.

Hopefully the herons who visited the pond to eat over the winter months will not have cleaned out the pond of bullfrogs.

Most likely next month I should start seeing the tadpoles swimming around close to the bank.

This big male was spotted in 2019, and was fortunate to have been able to capture him with my camera.

When I walk the path that is next to the pond the frogs who are basking on the grassy bank will leap into the pond with a very crazy scream like pitch that startles me every time.

Bullfrogs are hard to see in the grassy banks, but they can get very loud with a unique baritone call that is deep and resonant, it resembles the mooing of a cow.

Although I don't have a pond myself a near neighbour does and we occasionally see frogs in the garden from time-to-time these days. About five years ago I used to go to the same spot in the garden at 10 o'clock at night and sit face-to-face with my delightful froggy friend - we met up for months and gazed at each other for about 15 minutes before I left and returned to the house. How sad was I to find one day that a cat had killed my dear friend. I miss our encounter to this very day. I still think of our meetings and your lovely image brought back happy/sad memories.

Very nice image beautifully captured and presented!

Cheers,

Andrew

Idyllic ... I have such a pond too. Love to hear the frogs croaking early evening. However the pond is deep to avoid waders steeling my ornamental Japanese koi. Mxx

Thank you Camellia!
In Arizona spring arrives quick (we are starting to be in it now) it is a brief period of really nice weather, then the heat of summer arrives in full force!
I'm one of those who will take the heat over the cold any day!!smile
