CUBA: China's Urban Break Association, is a recently initiated, loosely organized group of individuals determined to going outside, forgetting about work for a few hours, and pretending to travel to foreign countries as long as those countries have cheese, wine, or mojitos.

This week's trip was to the East side of the Forbidden City for an evening picnic along the moat/canal in “Venice”. Putting this all down in print makes it sound a little weird, but anyone experiencing the pre-Olympics madness in Beijing should be at a point where they understand the need for an active imagination and a chance to sit down as physically far from one's own computer or office as possible.

The moat at the Forbidden City, during sunset/moonrise.

Corner tower.

Picnicking in the dark as the day finally cools off.

Across the moat. Primo real estate.

They used to/do sell these lanterns in the Hou Hai area where you light a cube of paraffin, the heat fills a paper lantern, and the whole thing rises into the sky. Flying objects are banned after July 20, but we're still not sure about flying burning lanterns. Either way, nothing burned down this night.
