Hazy Hangzhou

I traveled to Hangzhou for my company's annual conference in early February. Word was, Beijing had an unusually clear weekend, while Hangzhou's air quality left something to be desired.

Here, trees are reflected in the very famous West Lake.

Another famous view of the lake, somewhat obscured.

Our trip also took us to Leifeng Pagoda [en.wikipedia.org] (not that [en.wikipedia.org] Lei Feng), which is a new pagoda surrounding the 1,000+ year old dilapidated original.

A very long escalator helps usher tourists up the hill to the pagoda, where one can then take an elevator to the top. Convenient.

For reasons not entirely clear to me, many tourists throw money at the remains of the original pagoda.

The view of the lake from the top, on this particular day, was somewhat bleak.

Hangzhou in gray.
