If you are a horror movie enthusiast, you should be excited about “Dawn of the Zombie Apocalypse” – the upcoming Netflix season. Dawn of the Zombie Apocalypse, as the name suggests, is based on the theme of Zombies and how they suck blood and eat human flesh to survive while turning other humans into zombies. It’s the war of survival for both humans and zombies.
Zombie movies have been around for as long as we all can remember and that’s why none of us bother to know about how this whole concept of zombies originated. Movies like The Walking Dead and World War Z took this thing to the next level with scintillating storylines and fabulous art direction.
Looking at these movies, most people have started considering zombies a thing of the modern world. However, it’s time to take you through the history of this theme.
This horror theme of zombies is not American. It owes its origination to the Haitian slaves who used to imagine being imprisoned in their bodies till eternity. The roots of zombies meet Haiti and Haitian Creole traditions that take them back to the African religious customs.
If you dive into the Haitian folklore, the zombies are the product of spells by a voudou sorcerer known as a bokor. There are several traditional books in Haiti where this concept has been presented. The word zombie is a West African origination and the Haitian slaves adopted it from there. The concept of zombies evolved further courtesy of the voudou religion.
The earliest concept of Zombies was closely related to slavery because of the Haitian slaves. It appeared in Haiti in the 17th and 18th centuries when the country was ruled by France and it was then called Saint-Domingue.
At that time, the African slaves were forced to work on sugar plantations. The slavery under the French rule was very brutal and the workers were forced to work till death and more workers were imported.
Hundreds of years since then the zombie have grown and today, it is widely acknowledged and appropriated by American pop culture. The American culture has also tarnished the origin of Zombies that turns the undead into a fantasy.
Coming back to Dawn of the Zombie Apocalypse, it is a mini-series that somehow relates to the original concept of zombies. The African zombies are everywhere and they are biting people, sucking blood, and turning more people into one of their own.
Thus, the battle of survival continues in an intense and emotional plot. The BTS (behind the scenes) reveals the action that went behind the camera to create a masterpiece. This movie is going to be different than all of the previous ones not because of the story but the way those creatures are killed and the world is saved.
So, when you watch the Dawn of the Zombie Apocalypse on Netflix, the origination of Zombies will go around in your brain and maybe you could actually relate to it.
