Robert Elswitt is a master of composition, Paul Thomas-Anderson's go-to Cinematographer. He can craft moods and direct the viewers attention with ease simply with shot composition, performances by Paul Dano and D-Day-Lewis help, but you can easily tell who is in charge and who's hating life in this particular frame grab. Careful attention to symmetry and great production design/mise-en-scene all add to the eerie effect this softly lit scene has on the viewer. That overexposed cross cut out in the wall would make me hate this church/cult even if i'd never seen the movie.
