Haditch 1

For the past few years, a group of women has been travelling to the graves of Tzaddikim – holy rabbis – in Ukraine. This year we didn't make it till the fall. I felt it appropriate to finally post today, as our first stop was Haditch, the resting place of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the Alter Rebbe, founder of the Chabad chassidic movement, and author of the monumental philosophical work, the Tanya. Today was Yud Tes Kislev (19th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev) his yahrtzeit – the day of his passing from this world.

We arrived late at night – the spooky looking structures are the partly built learning / hospitality center. We only went down to the gravesite early the next morning.

Arrival late at night – these yet unfinished structures looked like theater props.

Descending to the building which encloses the grave, and a small synagogue. The rest of the cemetery is in the woods.

The nature photos are better enlarged

I think the spiders in Ukraine must also drink vodka, because the webs are rarely “normal.” I have to resign myself to not getting beautifully symmetrical shots…

Note the graves among the trees.

Writing prayer requests…

… and praying

Memorial plaque on wall near the grave. There are more pictures from our previous trips – see links on Haditch 2.

The river serenely flows beyond the trees in the next three photos

Back up those steps again
