In the Kalsa district, one of the oldest in Palermo, there is the church of Santa Maria dello Spasimo. The peculiarity of this building is the lack of the roof, which makes it an open-air cathedral. The spooky gothic church was supposed to be part of a complex at the beginning of the 16th century, but the work lasted far longer than expected and, due to the lack of money, in 1537 the church was left unfinished. In the following years the building was used as a theater, plague hospital, hospice, hospital and works of art storage. Today it is the home of the Palermo jazz school.
