River Rising at the Bluff

Big wheel keep on turnin'
Proud Mary keep on burnin'
Rollin', rollin'
Rollin' on the river.

The Mississippi River is near flood stage. We took a ride to Southern University in north Baton Rouge for a bluffside view.

We hoped that reptiles meant snakes rather than alligators, but even snakes wouldn't be any fun.

Check out the young trees peeking above the water in this view to the south.

Some of the history of this piece of land, albeit it hard to read.

The river is wide to the north.

A marker about the origins of Southern University

One of the newest buildings on campus–a great view from those windows

Looking west at a tugboat and the opposite shore. The current was really fast, though you can't see it well in this shot.

African American history in Baton Rouge

See the State Capitol beyond the “old bridge”.

The gravesites of Dr. Joseph Clark, founder of Southern U., and his family.

A nascent fire ant mound

This piece was designed by famed sculptor Frank Hayden.

This marker identifies all those instrumental in the placement of the sculpture.

The sign says Collectables and Receivables are managed out of this building. I'm guessing they mean money and not Star Wars figurines.

We were surprised that more people weren't taking advantage of the riverfront park on a beautiful spring day. My wife is the figure walking at the lower right.

We ate lunch on the way back downtown at Roul's Deli in Scotlandville. “Best Philly Cheesesteak in Town” is a minimal accomplishment in Baton Rouge and not necessarily supported by what we ate.
