Greece Day 10

Today JR took a boat out to the volcano inside the caldera and another small island. I spent the day exploring Oia further (translate: shopping). About 5:00 we headed out for the far west end of the island to watch the sunset. So did a lot of people! I'm hoping today to show you something besides more fabulous churches!

Twin bell towers with the caldera behind.

Stopping along the way west, Fira (capitol of Santorini) in the background.

The doors are even great looking! (so is the man!)

Oia and it's tiny port below.

Windmills and houses.

The ants crawling on the mound… actually, on the castle ruins, waiting for sunset. This is as crowded as it gets…. EVERYONE wants to see the sunset!

So, see the ‘caves’ and rubble? There was an earthquake in 1956 that destroyed most of this area. These are remains of cave houses. There are still quite a few areas like this interspersed with the new houses.

Nice sailing vessel crossing the sun on the sea.

Smiling for the camera! What's NOT to smile about…

Sun setting over the end of the adjacent island.

Bell tower from the church in the town square at last light.

#1 should be enlarged and framed as soon as you get home from your honeymoon!
