HELP! B/W assignment

by Jacki April. 12, 2013 878 views

So this month my photo club assignment is black & white shots. Since the person doing last months critiques pretty much said my “golden hour” shots were shit, I'm seeking advance input! 8^)

So if you have time, which FOUR photos do you like best? If you have a little more time, why? OH… or feel free to just critique something… I'm developing a very thick skin!

Thanks! And for taking the time here is an interesting link to “18 Essential Free Photoshop Tutorials for b/w” [lightstalking.com]

Okay, here goes. I like:
2. because of the three layers from cliff, to tracks to beach
4. The bikes and the beautiful old truck (and I KNOW that curve on Sunset, too!)
5. for all the same reasons Stormfish likes it!! Brilliant!
_____

I also like 6, but if it could have only been just "that" much more crisp in clarity, although I know it would have been hard to get as it doesn't really stop and pose, does it?
I like the shot with the Mexican ladies, because it looks so dated begin in B&W. Wonderful

I'd go for 3,4,5, and 7.

oh, wow... freaking WOW W.O.W. WOOOOOW at the roaring airplane shot!! it's simply perfect and this time i can't even imagine that it might look better in color - it simply works as it is! :-)

if i could bend the rules, i'd say you produce 4 versions of this one and win whatever price is attached!

it seems i was wrong...your new friend did not comment here! may be he prefers huge audience in frontpage.
all are perfect less 5 and 8 for half wing and horse.
my favs are by decreasing order 1, 4, 7, 9...and last one.

Give #7 a good crop like cut out the field go for the building but don't center it then straighten?? Maybe more of a panoramic look to it? What do I know I photograph birds!! :)

Sherij 8 years, 6 months ago

Ok so for sure not #8 because it looks like the horse farted at least that's the impression I get from the ladies! :) If you happen to find the other piece of the airplane wing you cut off stick it back on that would have been my #1 pick! #10 creeps me out worse than the Sock Monkey! The Dragon party should be in color?? Aren't they at a party a vibrant party or have they been holding those dam dragons up all day and their arms are tired?? Hmmmm So 2,3,&4 have my votes! I almost said 7 but the crops look like they are wilting or almost dead? I don't know your instructor scares me and I would be balling my eyes out if she said my golden hour of bird photography was shi%t! As for your thick skin it should do well in protecting you this summer against UV rays?? Hmmm Good luck to you. I hope your skin doesn't have to get thicker-er? Edit in Lightroom?? :) :)

1, 3, 6 and 7. #7 best, I don't know why, maybe reminds me of this old Wizard of Oz movie. #6 becuase I remember that photo of yours (in color?), #1 is very interesting (what are the trees doing, what it that tangle in between; oh! and the GIRL!), #3 becuase I love the woman's expression, whatever it represents :)

Great fun, thank you!

they're really all so wonderful in their own way, seriously (other then the mexican women and horse photo, that one is uncomfortable for me visually for some reason)
i am drawn to #1 - all around rather perfect composition but it just feels so strong and really pulls in the viewer. the essence of the photo is what makes it.
the farm landscape is very fairy tale, in a good way
the rim lighting/back lighting on the dragon is lovely also

First one is actually (to my taste) very good, thanks to the bright light ...that makes the picture gets a magical and mysterious touch.
Second one has much to look at ... and that's what makes it a very interesting and great image to look at.
Shame that in photo five one wing of the aircraft is missing a piece. Otherwise, perfect picture for me. ;^)
Seventh one, try to make this perfectly horizontal and (I think) this also will be a winner.

#1 (innocence) is my first choice, then #3 (pace of life), #6 (creature), #10 (fake)

#6 (I love it!), 1 (mystery), 10 (for the reflection) and 5 (in spite of the cut wing...).

Hope you don't have the same critic as last time - he was an idiot!

#1 - really like this - it has a vintage feel to it - just wondering if a square crop would be better with the tree trunks forming the left and right sides of the square - may bring more focus to the girl
#2 - I like this due to the odd combination of elements - I would perhaps burn in the sides of the train a little to make it stand out a bit more
#3 - what can I say - Californians are weird
#4 - the framing of this isn't right for me - too much nothing in the foreground and some off blurred thing going on in the bottom left corner
#5 - I like this - nice and sharp for an "action" pic - would perhaps crop some of the sky top and bottom.
#6 - I like the idea but I think it's a bit blurred and bit too grainy for making the top 4
#7 - potentially the best of the bunch (you know I like clouds) but I would make a couple of amendments. I would darken the background sky to make the clouds pop a bit more (reducing blue and cyan in the b/w conversion would probably do it). And I woulod probably go for a square crop to lose the building on the left - I think it's a distraction from the main building - btw, it may be my eyesight but are the buildings leaning to the left slightly?
#8 - same comment as #3
#9 - really like the composition but the significant glare I find distracting
#10 - I like the weirdness of this but not sure how well it would fare with your critic

So, overall, I would go with numbers 1, 2, 5, 7

I think the #1 the best, and also the # 2; # 7;. and # 6; or # 8. :)
(if you have a watch, know what time it is; but if you have two, you can not be sure...
I think trust in yourself!:)

Some people can't tell shit from pudding. It is going to be a hard one to please this critic, and I don't feel that you should pander to their idea of what a "good" photograph should be. But if you insist on going ahead, here is my choice (and what do I know?)

#1 for mystery
#10 for fun
#5 for technique
#2 because I like it. Can't say why!

Jacki, you are a great photographer. You have your own eye, your own style. You break the rules, which is how an art form develops.
I could find something "wrong" with every picture shown on PB, but that would make me a dissatisfied old woman who knows all the rules which were laid down in the last century.
If the critic says shit, laugh in their face. What do they know!

The first one is my favorite: it seems to go out of a book of tales. The light is excellent, the almost black trunks, this little girl in the lost look, the composition. Everything pleases me in this image !

best one for me is #5. great contrast and feeling of movement. Second is #3 also good contrast and not to cluttered.
not so good #1 was a good subject but the light flare distracts from the subject, #9..I personally don't like the softness in detail. #8 I would have preferred the subjects to be isolated from the background with a shallower DOF..
but then this is just me
keep up the great work

I like the last one. I enjoyed observing how the reflections merge with the dummies, as if the dummies were a reflection of ourselves although I have to say that the contrast in the jellyfish works well in black and white. One subjective point of view and one formalist.

I like 5, 7, and 4 best - in that order. #1 would be good for the theme of the week - it looks kinda mysterious!

Ok.....1, 3, 4, 5. #1 being my favorite. I love the brightness in the background and around her head. It's kinda surreal to me. I like the contrast in #3, and because it's a great shot of a moment frozen in time. The bikes and old car just appeals to me, along with all the shrubbery in the background. I love the detail and clarity of the plane. The smoke is just an added bonus that makes it interesting. Hope this helps. :)

Well, you certainly are getting some varied feedback..confused now? I love #1..storybook look, #2 like the composition, so much to see, eyes travel around, #5 close, concise, exciting movement, #6 great detail.

#1 is intriguing, but to me there's something not quite right with the composition and as someone mentioned the bright background.
#2 has been mentioned a few times, but I can't figure out what to focus on...so much going on....
#5 is best IMHO. Great clarity and tones....the white smoke really adds some drama and movement.
#7 is very nice, but it seems to be slightly tilted. Would it help to straighten up the silos? That's what distracts me....

I'm no expert but I like everything about the 4th composition , then the 10th , 8th , and 3rd. I'm afraid I can't really say why'

#2 and 8 for me for sure! I love the plane shot, but would like to see the missing wing parts in the picture... #1 has a strange feel to it, I feel it is creepy... but more importantly, they might find fault with that very bright area in the background... can you tone that down a bit? I like #6 also...though would prefer it in color, I guess... what I think would look stunning in B&W ? Some weathered faced homeless guy's portrait isn super sharp closeup... I find those are so strong images usually... like the ones Xabolcs likes to make, if you know what I mean...

#2, 5, 6 and 7. #2 -a landscape, that always appeals to me, but also love the composition, depth caused by having the large rocks in the foreground. #5 - love the sharpness of the airplane in flight and the puffs of exhaust coming out of the engine. #6 - I like the stark contrast between the jellyfish and the water! #7 Farm seems to be highlighted by the light in this shot and the sky is beautiful even in B&W. Light moves from the clouds in the upper right to the farm and then to the corn in the foreground, bringing you through the picture! If your photo club doesn't like them, _ _ _ _ _ them, you only have to please yourself!

1) The aeroplane ... clear, concise and exciting.
2) The second, the rocky beach ... I like the depth to this, the railway helps to define this, especially
with the approaching train.
3) The first with the wee girl ... though it's a little to bright around her head, which lacks definition.
4) The field ... I like the sky.
