This is the Barmash Pass, the main route through the mountains in south-east Albania.
It is a glorious spot now but hasn't always been.
The memorial marks the location where partisans attacked a German convoy in July 1943. In reprisal the Germans sent an armoured column to the nearby village of Borove where they set fire to every building with the inhabitants inside, killing over 100 civilians and razing the village to the ground.
Another episode in Albania's long and turbulent history.
