A walk to an Aladdin's cave...

by David Swatton October. 08, 2011 2484 views

We walked steeply uphill from the town of Permet to the village of Leuba in the hills above the valley.

There we visited the 11th century orthodox church in it's dramatic location clinging to the side of the mountain. Inside was very dark and dilapidated but every piece of wall was covered in the most wonderful medieval frescoes.

Apologies for the quality of the pictures because there was very little light and they are all hand-held but hopefully they will give an idea of what it was like.

Passing locals on the way…

With great views of the valley below…

To the church wedged into the side of the mountain…

And inside, the most beautiful frescoes…

I'm a real sucker for religious art (ANY religion) despite not being terribly religious personally ... LOVE that last one. Intriguing view in #3 too.

PUH-LEASE don't apologize. I'm just so happy to see things like this through your blog.I just don't see how I will ever see them in "real life". . but here's an interesting fact. I weigh 94 lbs and can fit fairly comfortably into a large duffle bag. Just sayin.
