Timur and the prophesy from beyond the grave...

Timur, or Tamerlane as he is better known in the West, is an Uzbeck national hero. He forged through bloody conquest one of the largest empires the world has ever seen. Scholars have estimated that over 17 million people died in his military campaigns and his name became associated with terror.

Yet he was also a great patron of the arts and rebuilt Samarkand in glorious fashion after the devastation wrought by Genghis Khan.

These pictures are of his mausoleum in Samarkand ?? his tomb is marked by the largest single piece of black jade in the world and people still come to pray here.

Timur??s body was exhumed by Soviet anthropologist Mikhail Gerasimov in 1941. The inside of the casket was inscribed: “Who ever opens my tomb, shall unleash an invader more terrible than I.” Two days after Gerasimov had begun the exhumation, Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, its invasion of the U.S.S.R. It is said that Stalin heard of this prophesy and ordered the body to be reburied with full Muslim ceremony. This was done in November 1942?. Weeks later the Soviet army decisively defeated the Germans at Stalingrad and changed the course of the 2nd World War…. coincidences or something more?
