The first part of the walk up to Llyn Cau rises steeply (very steeply) up a hillside covered in ancient woodland and criss-crossed by streams and cascades tumbling over mounds of rocks. Scientists believe the woods have grown here since the end of the last Ice Age about 10,000 years ago. I love dense, dark woods like these (perhaps I had Druid ancestors), especially the vibrant greens of the moss, lichens and leaves and it was such a contrast with the barren rocky landscape ahead.
