Today when people want to show off their wealth they go for fancy cars, designer clothing and the like. Back in the 14th century a wall could do the trick...
When most people were living in timber framed wattle and daub shacks a building like this, in which every stone is hand-knapped flint, simply screams wealth. Indeed, it would only be the VERY wealthiest people in society who could afford such a labour-intensive building method.
I'm sure you can guess the punch line... yes this building is in the cathedral precinct in Norwich. The church... an organisation that has always favoured self-aggrandizement over self-effacement.
But one can't be anything but impressed and a favourite quote comes to mind from George Carlin... "you have to stand IN AWE, IN AWE of the all time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion." They've maintained their con longer and more successfully than any grifter in history.
