A highlight of the trip was a stay in La Guardia, a medieval walled village on the border of the Basque and Rioja regions. Vehicles are not allowed inside the village walls so we parked outside and walked in to our accommodation which was a former merchant's house that has been converted into a lovely little hotel in one of the narrow alleys in the centre of the village.
The village is full of character and the lack of cars helps keep it unspoiled.
Surrounding the village are endless vineyards which specialise in the production of Rioja wine, one of my faves. Much imbibing was done!
