In China, a Chinese New Years tradition is to hang couplets (对联) on the sides of the doorway to one's house. In the big city, the couplets are preprinted on red paper, often embossed with gold or fancy designs. Sometimes, they come packaged as a freebie with another product in the supermarket. In the rural areas and small towns however, people hire calligraphers to write Chinese New Year's couplets to hang on either side of the entrance to their house.
