Pinehurst #2 is one of the most well-known golf courses in the world - the site of numerous PGA tour events. In 1900, it became the first of over 600 courses designed by the legendary Scottish architect, Donald Ross. #2 consists of mainly waste sand areas with “wire grass” and difficult rolling greens. It is the course on which the late Payne Stewart won the US Open in 1999, then died in a plane crash before he could defend his title at Pebble Beach in 2000.

Today, we checked off the 17th course on our quest to play the top 23 in the US! (And I'm VERY happy to have it behind us!!)

Since we were walking and playing, the only camera I could carry was my point-and-shoot, so these are mainly snapshots!

It was a beautiful day for golf in Pinehurst, North Carolina - course #2 was our goal!

Getting set up and taking a last look down the fairway on the first hole

The entire course was covered in sand and grasses that were more than challenging!

These majestic pines line the fairways, but rarely come into play

One of the few holes I parred, just before I took a 10 on the next one! I scored a 100 (not a good day for me!), but Larry had an 87 which was excellent on this demanding course!

Larry and our caddy Robert waiting for the other people who played with us to hit. Since this is a walking course, they suggest that you use a caddy (“looper”).

Even though Pinehurst #2 is very prestigious, for us it probably ranks near the bottom of courses that we've played, mainly because it lacks diversity - every hole looks exactly the same and it wasn't a very pretty course. But, I'm glad we got to walk the fairways where the greats of golf have trod!
