Morning Scene at the Coast Guard & Pilot Docks

by Jay Boggess October. 29, 2018 457 views

Early, hazy, calm morning scene, at the Coast Guard/Pilot docks...The two twin vessels behind the Pilot Boat are Naval Submarine Tenders, which accompany the atomic submarines when they come down the strait, to their base on the Hood Canal. I think the Sub Tenders look like gigantic menacing frogs with bright eyes, on the lookout for any trouble....(((grin)))

They do look like frogs. The power of those sub tenders is amazing . I was lucky enough to be at the mouth of the St Marys river when they were turning a sub around .

That's one of the main things I love about living here, is the opportunity to see so many interesting vessels "doing their thing" on a daily basis! Luckily we have one of the deepest natural harbors, located in such an advantageous location, along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which is a main thoroughfare between the Pacific & the mainland of the the Seattle area, so we get a lot of marine traffic to watch.....

Out of curiosity... Do you wake up very soon, or go to bed really late?

It varies, depending on the time of year, my mood, external concerns, internal concerns...etc, etc, etc...At my age, waking up to pee is a nightly occurrence, as well...... Normally I'll get up & out side before the sunrise, to catch that magical light, to keep my camera happy.......The same goes for sunset time......Luckilly, I don't have to report for a job every morning like I did, most of my life, so if I don't sleep enough at night, I can always take a nap, most any time, during the day.....which I thoroughly enjoy, especially after lunch....

I used to be a night owl, but now I'm just a "crazy old cuckoo bird" that may be awake & busy almost any time, night or day, now that I don't have any regular job schedule, to which I must adhere.....Hallelujah!!!smile+1.......

I had never heard of Submarine Tenders before. What is their purpose specifically? Love the picture

I'm not totally aware of all their duties. I know they act as escorts when the subs are on the surface, coming & going from their base. I think they bring supplies to the subs too, so they don't have to go into port.

ps.....glad you "liked" the images, as well!
