Sable Island part 1

I had the amazing privilege of visiting Sable Island where I volunteered to work with scientists doing research on seal population.

We flew out of Shearwater airport on a Canadian Coast Guard helicopter.

Nell and Jim are all strapped in and ready to go.

It's me! Welcome aboard, I'll be your pilot today… Just kidding. I was riding shotgun, the real pilot sat on the right. ;)

Mostly the flight is pretty dull as it's just over seemingly endless open ocean. It gets interesting when the crescent shape of Sable island appears in the distance.

As we approached the island we could see the thousands of seals dotting the beaches and all over the dunes.

Our first night on the island was to be spent at B.I.O. house. It turned into two night due to high winds and rain (this photo was taken a few days later)

The rain stopped but the wind continued all night.

Sand, seals, surf, and sky.

When the weather cleared up enough we loaded up the ATVs and headed for the more rustic accomodations at East Light.
