Beauty and serenity under the blue New Mexican sky. It's hard to believe that just 8 miles away, almost in the center of the above photo, at 5:29 a.m. on July 16, 1945, this peaceful expanse of New Mexico forever changed the world in which we live. This is Trinity Atomic Bomb Site, where the work on the Manhattan Project came to its explosive climax. Although no information on the test was released until after the atomic bomb had been used as a weapon, the flash of light and shock wave made a vivid impression over an area with a radius of at least 160 miles.
Normally, one cannot get closer to the actual site than we did. However, the site does open a few times a year for guided tours. The White Sands Missile Base website offers information and a schedule.
